Character Name: Shadow Link
Fandom: Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Plus (Manga)
Character History: Hyrule is a land of fantasy. Monsters and castles and a mix of different races. Throughout history, there is the story of the hero, the villain, and the princess. Link is the hero, this time around born to the head of the royal guard, and childhood friend of Princess Zelda.
And the owner of a very different shadow. Shadow Link was Link's shadow, oddly aware of his own existence due to Link's powerful light. Stronger the light, stronger the shadow. Shadow Link was always following his owner, admiring him, but at some point, he wanted Link to turn around. To pay attention to him, but he was a shadow. Owners never looked back to their shadows.
It made Shadow angry, bitter, and then he was noticed by Ganondorf, the King of Darkness. He offered Shadow a means to be more than he was, to force Link to see him and pay for ignoring him. Shadow agreed. Shadow was Ganondorf's agent, kidnapping Princess Zelda and seven maidens, and forcing Link to pull the Four Sword that had been acting as a seal for the Sorcerer Vaati. With the Sorcerer acting as the Big Bad, Ganondorf is able to act freely and Shadow Link is able to focus on going after the Links with Vaati dealing with everything else.
More over, with pulling of the Four Sword, Link is split into four; Green, Red, Blue, and Vio. The only ability the four sword is able to do as Vaati seals the rest of the power.
Shadow Link takes Castletown, using his appearance as Link to ruin his reputation and to catch the people off guard. He conquers the town and has many of the guards transported to the Dark World to use as puppets. He sends the puppets after the Links at first, only choosing to confront them when they refuse to fight.
He quickly proves to be too much for them. With their swords more or less useless against his abilities as a shadow and their own difficulties in working together, he beats them down easily. It's not until the Blue Maiden uses the last of her power to send them a fairy that he's finally driven away in fear of the light.
But he doesn't relent, sending monsters, taking towns, throwing obstacles in the Link's way until he finally decides to separate them. Vaati uses his magic to send them across the map after where each are met with distractions and danger. In this, Shadow sees an opportunity. Green is the responsible one, Blue is the angry one, Red is the nice one, and Vio was the smart one. The smart one who was often annoyed with everyone fighting. The craftiest. The one who could surely see how the light's chances of winning were dwindling. The one Shadow thought he could convince to his side. Because Shadow's anger was born out of a need for acknowledgement and while he painted it as permanently weakening the Links, he just wanted one for himself.
He approaches Vio, promising him power, respect, everything any sane person would want. He could be better. With a little dark magic in his words, he thinks he's convinced Vio to his side. Tentatively, but Vio starts acting on his own in support of the dark side. The magic was just to keep Vio subdued. For him to act was for him to really choose. Vio tricks Red and Blue and it makes Shadow hopeful. When the time came that the other three found Vio and Shadow, it's Vio who talks to them, who tells them to give up, and takes Green's challenge. And seemingly slays the other.
Shadow is convinced Vio has chosen him. That their victory is assured because with one hero dead, there was no way for the Four Sword's potential to ever be awakened. And that means Vio is his forever. Shadow celebrates the victory, telling Vio everything. How Vaati is a front, that Ganondorf is the evil master mind, and about the Dark Mirror. It's through the Dark Mirror that Shadow was brought to the world of light, and it's what feeds him and Vaati unlimited dark power.
And when Vio proposes to use the Dark Mirror to defeat Ganondorf, Shadow Link explains it's only through the heroes working with Zelda he can be defeated. Vio then says for them to use Zelda as the means to defeat Ganondorf and take Hyrule for themselves. It's a shock, but in hearing this, it makes Shadow happy. Vio wants to rule with him, wants them to be powerful together! It's then Shadow declares Vio a trust worthy ally. In his mind, it was a friend.
Hours later, he finds Vio in front of the mirror with a slain cyclops and a hammer found not far away. Thinking Red and Blue are still trying to win, he asks the Dark Mirror where the other two are...and finds out Green is still alive. Vio tries to talk his way out of it, but Shadow compels the mirror to show him what had happened minutes before and he sees Vio about to shatter it.
Angry, betrayed, Shadow demands his execution. He yells, he rants, he tells Vio how wrong he is, and just gets angrier when Vio reacts calmly, that Shadow should have expected it. Before Shadow can have Vio and the two stolen Four Swords thrown into the lava, the other three Links appear. A fight breaks out, the four Links working together a lot better now, and having mostly awaken the Four Swords' power.
Until it's just Shadow and them. Vio explains it was easy to manipulate Shadow. Ultimately they're the same person, except Vio couldn't ignore the hero in him. Shadow attacks in anger and is killed.
Only to be awakened later from the Dark Mirror. The Links have found the Tower of Winds where Zelda was. They're fighting Vaati and are about to win. He's tole to go fight them, to help Vaati win, and Shadow is just...done. He doesn't want to fight. Everything hurts too much and he's broken.
But Zelda is there. Another thing he hates, to be pitied, to be seen as pathetic. Except that's not what Zelda does. Instead she says that the light isn't trying to hurt him, that he was a hero too. It's words that rock Shadow to his core. A feeling of true acknowledgement.
Then Zelda is taken away to be sacrificed. Shadow refused to let it happen. He would not let the one person who thought he was worth something die, and even if he felt on the edge of death, he sought out the Links. Disguising himself as the currently separated Vio, he leads them through the Tower and gives them tips to beat Vaati. Unfortunately they can't get Vaati to stay down and Shadow realizes the problem.
The Dark Mirror makes it so Vaati won't die, just like he didn't die. He goes to the Dark Mirror and breaks it so the heroes can defeat Vaati. At the cost of his own life. It's when the last of the dark energy is leaving him the Links find him and Shadow speaks plainly. How he just wanted to be seen. But he was able to defeat their enemy. Maybe in the end, he was an ally?
Vio tells him he is, that he was one of them, and for the first time, Shadow feels as if he was being filled with light...and vanishes.
Returned once again, to Link's shadow.
Character Personality: Shadow Link doesn't quite know who he is at the moment. He was a shadow, then he was a villain, and then he learned that he could be a hero. It's kind of left him a bit 'what do' with how he wants to act. He does know he wants to at least try being a hero. It's just figuring out how to do that and not be frustrated with himself.
Because at the end of the day, Shadow is kind of a jerk. He's rude, abrasive, and is incredibly smug. He may not be sure if he's better than someone else, but he's more than happy to act like it. It's honestly super fun to rile people up. However, he'll at least make the effort to not be needlessly hostile. Not polite, but at least not trying to provoke a fight at any given moment.
Shadow Link is also rather smart. He's good at strategy, puzzles, and manipulating people. He knows how to play the long game and seeing the bigger picture. He's not afraid to get into a fight, but it's more fun tricking people and making them destroy themselves. He's not exactly book smart, since Link wasn't, but he's a quick learner.
He's rather obsessive over his owner. He only exists because of Link, so it goes without saying Link is the most important person to him. Out of the four, it's Vio he likes most, and he didn't really pay much mind to anyone else besides Zelda. It'll be a new thing, interacting with people beyond partying with some monsters and pacifying people who think they can control him, but he wants to do his owner proud. Most anything he does is motivated by his Link or his Zelda to some extent.
Though Shadow wants to feel like he matters. That he's making some kind of difference with his existence. He hates people who want to make him feel like he's worthless and it's the quickest way to make him lash out. He wants to be something to people even if he's going to need to figure out how that works with others. He's not likely to let on how awkward he is, but safe to say, he really has no clue what he's doing with people he's not terrorizing. So instead he grandstands and fakes it until he makes it. Which is especially important since verbal communication is kind of difficult. He's very good at reading body language, being a shadow, but it's easier to miss subtleties of tone and also why he has a kind of drawl while speaking. He even has the habit of mimicking people's body language if he's not paying attention.
The biggest difference between Shadow Link and his owner is the fact that Shadow will let fear rule him. He can be brave, but unlike Link, his fear can and will make him run. He's terrified of light. He knows now it doesn't necessarily have to hurt him, but it's going to be a trial to learn to not be afraid of it completely. If he feels he might actually die, without a really good motive to stay, he's going to run. He's not afraid of every fight, he knows he's a more than capable fighter, but he's very unwilling to risk his neck for just anything.
And of course, Shadow is very new to this good guy thing. It isn't really the hardest to tempt him to do bad. He's trying, but it's not easy for a recently reformed villain, let alone one who embodies the shadow of a hero's heart. He can easily end up on a slippery slope. As is, he's a hero whose more willing to do more questionable things. If stealing leads to a greater good, why not steal? If this person is a threat, why not kill them? He really doesn't feel much in the way of guilt, so much as hate how much of a disappointment he'd be to his owner and Zelda.
There is, however, one thing Shadow Link will never, ever do. Once someone has Shadow's loyalty? They have it for life. It's one thing when Shadow makes a pact and both parties know neither one should be trusted, as he did with Ganondorf and Vaati. But if he feels someone legitimately trusts him, and formed a relationship with him? Nothing is going to make him stab them in the back. It's a special kind of evil that he hadn't expected at all from Vio, and it's not one he will do to someone else.
Powers and Abilities: Expert sword fighting abilities, plus the ability to use several other weapons, such as bows, hammers, boomerangs, magic wands, grappling hooks, and bombs. Great skills with puzzles.
Shadow Link is also a shadow and that comes with several other abilities. He can go intangible, he can float in the air, he can morph his body into all sorts of shapes, and he doesn't really have organs or blood. He can even alter his coloring to look like Link, but color swapping is all he can do for looking like a human. Normal weapons don't work on his body. He can also form claws and teeth and alter his clothes as they're actually part of his body. He's also able to summon a sword from the shadows. On the other hand, he's sensitive to light. Normal light is always draining and exhausting and magical light is extremely harmful. Though it's partly psychomatic, so it's not as much of a death sentence now, but it's still not recommended to him. He used to be able to do several things with the Dark Mirror, such as teleporting, sealing people, puppeteering their bodies, and using dark persausion.

Network: [So here's a kid, just looking bored at the camera.] Alright, so what is there to do for FUN around here? I mean, I guess I could go fight giant spiders, but that gets real dull real quick. Bendin' sounds like one of those things I'm gonna need to work at forever, so I'll do that whenever, but that ain't FUN. [He's gesturing pretty wildly as he talks.]
There's gotta be somewhere with adventure? More interestin' fights? Are there pirates? Always wanted to fight pirates. Roamin' band of bandits? [He waves his hand around as if he's wielding a sword before finally sighing, putting his head in a hand, staring at the camera, looking rather irate.]
Seriously, I'm gonna die of boredom, tell me there's actually interestin' stuff to do besides playin' house.
Third Person: He can sit in the sunlight.
It's the most disorientating thing in the world. He can sit in the sunlight and it doesn't hurt. It doesn't even make him feel particularly tired. Sure, he could take daylight better than magical light, but it was always so draining. It felt like he was dragging around a hundred pounds on each limb whenever he was in the light. Constantly draining, constantly exhausting. There was never a moment to just breathe when he was in the light.
But now he's sitting in the sunlight. Just outside the shade of a tree, because there's still that feeling of anxiety. Waiting for it to hurt, but it doesn't. It's....nice, almost. Like that warmth that had filled him before he returned to the Shadow World. He knows why he can do it right now. Coming to this world had taken 'special' abilities. He's not sure if his insides are human, if he can bleed, he's nervous about testing that, but without his actual abilities as a shadow, it seems his weakness to light was gone to. He wondered if when he could manage them again, if he'll be weak again? He wonders if it's worth it.
But he feels like he should. In the end, he is a shadow. This isn't something he wants to change. He's a shadow who became more. He's a shadow who made his owner acknowledge him when shadows never are. Even if he doesn't need the powers, he should still make sure he's a shadow. It didn't feel right when a shadow had never done it before. He wasn't sure if any other shadow COULD do it, but that milestone should still matter.
But maybe....maybe he could be a shadow who can stand in the light. Nautilus. The city of change apparently. He hadn't thought he could change until Zelda's words. He thought he had changed as much as he could when he awoke in the Shadow World. But now he could be more. He could change and grow and maybe he could really be someone worthy to call ally. Not just from a moment's decision, but actually trying this hero thing.
Maybe...maybe...
But first he moves back under the shade of the tree and let's out a breath of relief. He has time. First, he'll conquer his fear of the light. Then...then he'll try being a hero.
